What type of tenant screening should I do?  


i've already had a problem with a tenant - what can I do to avoid this again? what type of tenant screening report would help?


Since you had a bad experience already, you should pull a credit, criminal, and eviction report on your tenant. If you are concerned about spending the money, ask the tenant for an application fee. If they resist, then tell them you credit the app fee toward the first month's rent. Better to do as much as you can upfront. I would also get some references - hopefully from a previous landlord that you can verify is actually a landlord. Always charge a security deposit fee separate from any prepaid rent you may decide to collect.
